Background of the Study
Trauma remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with an increasing burden in low- and middle-income countries (WHO, 2024). In Nigeria, road traffic accidents, falls, burns, violence, and industrial injuries contribute significantly to the high rates of traumatic injuries requiring urgent medical intervention (Afolabi & Musa, 2023). Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, play a critical role in trauma management by providing timely assessment, stabilization, and coordination of patient care to improve survival outcomes.
Effective trauma management requires nurses to possess clinical competence, rapid decision-making skills, and familiarity with advanced life support procedures (Ogunyemi et al., 2024). However, studies have indicated that many nurses in Nigeria face challenges such as inadequate training, lack of essential trauma equipment, and insufficient exposure to emergency scenarios (Eze & Bello, 2023). These limitations compromise their ability to provide optimal care for trauma patients.
General Hospital, Gombe, serves as a major referral center for trauma cases in the northeastern region of Nigeria. Given the high volume of emergency cases handled by the hospital, assessing the preparedness of nurses in trauma management is essential. This study aims to evaluate nurses’ competency levels, training adequacy, and resource availability in handling trauma cases, with a view to improving patient care and survival rates.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing incidence of trauma cases in Nigeria, there is a lack of comprehensive evaluation regarding the preparedness of nurses to manage such emergencies effectively (WHO, 2024). At General Hospital, Gombe, anecdotal reports suggest that nurses often struggle with the rapid assessment and stabilization of trauma patients due to insufficient training, limited resources, and high patient influx (Okafor & Usman, 2023).
A well-prepared nursing workforce is essential for improving trauma outcomes, yet challenges such as inadequate continuous medical education, absence of standardized emergency protocols, and limited exposure to high-acuity trauma scenarios hinder effective management (Musa & Ibrahim, 2023). Understanding these gaps is crucial for developing strategies that enhance nurses’ preparedness in trauma care.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of preparedness of nurses in managing trauma cases at General Hospital, Gombe.
2. To identify factors that affect nurses’ competency in trauma care.
3. To recommend strategies for improving trauma preparedness among nurses.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of preparedness of nurses in managing trauma cases at General Hospital, Gombe?
2. What factors affect nurses’ competency in handling trauma emergencies?
3. What strategies can enhance nurses’ preparedness for trauma management?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is a significant relationship between trauma training and nurses’ preparedness in managing trauma cases.
2. Limited access to trauma care resources negatively impacts nurses’ ability to provide effective emergency interventions.
3. Regular simulation-based training significantly improves nurses’ competency in trauma management.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in the emergency and trauma units of General Hospital, Gombe, assessing their preparedness in managing trauma cases. It will not include other healthcare professionals involved in trauma care. Limitations may include variations in nurses’ self-reported preparedness and differences in exposure to trauma cases among staff.
